The Making Of COLOUR - Part 1

Hillsong Collected

"Tea & Toast"

So Adam the Brave (aka one of our lovely COLLECTED editors) said that some people might be interested in a little insight into "the making of Colour". So if you are up for it, I'm prepared to give it a bash. I know that sometimes I look at events and creative moments and think, "whoa, how on earth did they do that?".

So we've been doing Colour for around 14 years! Like many things it began as a seed (won't tell the whole story here, because I'm currently writing the Sisterhood book and some of that big picture journey will be found there) ... but the JOURNEY BEGAN with an unmistakably "clear directive" - a clear directive that I believe we haven't diverted from, nor added to. The directive/mandate has grown, refined, matured and shaped itself into a stunning Movement of women across the earth over the last 14 years... but the bottom line of WHY we do it, is as clear in my thinking today as when I felt the Holy Spirit seed it.

So in many ways, this is where Colour "begins" each year ... the foundation of "why" has been laid, and our responsibility is to listen (each year) to the leading of Gods Spirit on what He would have us do and how He would have us communicate it.

I know that may seem elementary or perhaps obvious, but it is a critical factor. If God wants to add a new layer, then we certainly want to be sensitive to that ... but also if He doesn't, we certainly have enough "already revealed" to busy ourselves with. It's the same principle as ... "if you feel God hasn't given you fresh instruction lately... don't sweat it, but rather stay busy and true with what you do know, or with the LAST THING He instructed you on".

So each year we "incline our ears heavenward". Our Creative team are amazing and although completely empowered to dream and gather ideas etc, they will wait for that initial creative brief or "anything fresh" from me. And I might add, I have learnt to wait also, because I refuse to "make this thing up".

So at 4am (and only hours before our first official 2011 Colour planning meeting) I woke with a few words swirling in my spirit. Having learnt the hard way, to get out of bed and write them down, because invariably you won't recall them in the morning.

And sometimes "it's just a handful of heaven-felt words" that create the starting point. So at 4am, downstairs at my kitchen bench, with the smell of toast permeating the house, I scribbled a rough draft of this years invitation ... a rough first draft that the team welcome from me with such beautiful encouragement, a rough draft that becomes a "creative pallet" that they are now busy dreaming/scheming/pondering/conceiving and running with.

Time schedules are in place for a global launch (because Colour is currently hosted in Sydney, London and Kiev) ... creative minds (in Sydney, London and Kiev) are collaborating to see what we can or can't do (within budget) ... and a photo shoot is scheduled for this week. And depending on what all these dynamics deliver, the birthing of another HEAVEN KISSED Colour gathering takes place ... a gathering designed to "GATHER His beautiful daughters from far and wide", a gathering designed to "EQUIP us in our God ordained potential", a gathering designed to "MOBILISE everyday, willing women from every corner of society and culture, in a bid to be a blessing and be the change wherever God plants them". Well (hallelujah) that's our hope and prayer!!
