Give Me Some Of The GOOD STUFF

I am a fan of preaching… I like different styles, I like different philosophies, I even like preaching I don’t even necessarily agree with. In the New Testament, it was described as “the good news”. And why I love the local church, is because you can get tons of the good stuff…

Our recent Hillsong Conference was a like a Krispy Kreme Doughnut Shop for those of us who love hearing Jesus preached: so many flavors, combinations, choices… you would have had to intentionally set out to leave unchanged if you couldn’t find a sermon that did not relate to you and impact your life in some small way.

I even love the responses that are evoked from the participants in the audience. Some favorites are “yes, I like it like that.” “Fix it up FANCY, Bishop.” “OH NO HE DIDN’T!” I am personally partial to “My wife soooooo needs to hear that! Write that down honey..”

There is something about the good news that should make you react. It should make you uncomfortable, but still strangely hopeful. It should make you think, but shouldn’t require you to pull out a dictionary to figure out what that word was the preacher just used that sounded like a foreign disease. It should make you leave saying “Man, Jesus is awesome and I need to change my life” rather than “That preacher was really good.” It should make you feel like you can’t measure up, but at the same time remind you that you don’t have too because of the Grace of God… It’s why preaching, in my humble opinion, can only be described as “givin’ folks the good stuff.”

For some reason Jesus could preach about sexual purity, yet prostitutes still felt loved enough to hang around him. He could preach about Holiness, yet the worst party planners, money thieves and drug dealers of the day, would climb trees just to get close to Him… I want to preach more of the good news, like Jesus did. And it’s also why I love the local church. Much like Krispy Kreme, our red light is always on reminding people that the good news is available and that more often than not, it’s “hot and fresh.”

So in the words of an elderly woman in an inner city church who stood up and yelled at me mid-sermon one time…. “Keep preachin’ white boy. Keep preachin’!! This is good stuff…” Wherever you are, whatever colour you are, whatever denomination you call home, whatever language you speak, keep preaching Jesus. He makes sense to everybody…
