Something Jack Nicholson Taught Me
One of the greatest dialogues from a movie has to be the court scene in "A Few Good Men" where Lt. Daniel Kaffee (Tom Cruise) tries to wind Col. Nathan R. Jessup (Jack Nicholson) up, in order to admit to an offense he had committed. I still cheer for Jack as he yells at the young Tom Cruise, "YOU CAN'T HANDLE THE TRUTH!"
In this dialogue, though, something stood out. Tom Cruise's character is questioning the well being of a particular soldier and Jack Nicholson's character said he feared the soldier was in danger. Tom Cruise responds, "Grave danger?" to which Jack Nicholson's character, the hardened soldier, asks, "Is there another kind?"
This question made me think about how often, in our post-modern society, we try and define everything and need the proper adjectives in order to really get the message across. I mean, how often do we say, "It's really really important" because "important" just didn't seem good enough? I wonder how many times my lack of urgency and total dedication might have watered down words like ‘passion’, ‘zeal’, ‘love’ and ‘sacrifice’?
When Jesus challenges me to sacrifice, I often ask "Even things that hurt?" to which I imagine him thinking "Is there another kind?" What about all the questions I have, when He asks me to love, forgive, seek and save, give, fast, pray, have faith or trust? I think they are all met with a "Is there another kind?"
My prayer is that I will take the Bible and God's words for us at face value. He says He loves you and wants to love the world through you, let's start there and see where it takes us.
